Friday 26th September is National Teaching Assistant Day, a chance to celebrate the incredible work of TAs across the UK. Teaching Assistants play a vital role in supporting pupils, teachers, and schools – and at Monarch Education, we’re proud to work with passionate individuals who make a real impact every day.

One of those individuals is Debrah, a supply Teaching Assistant who’s been registered with our Bristol team for the past two years. Her story is a powerful example of how supply TA roles can offer flexibility, fulfilment, and long-term career satisfaction.

Why Choose Supply Work as a Teaching Assistant?

Debrah’s journey into supply work began with a simple trial day – and she never looked back. “I said I’d try a day… and a year later, I’m still here!”

Since joining Monarch Education, Debrah has been placed in long-term roles that match her strengths and experience. She credits the agency for understanding her skills and placing her in schools where she can thrive.

“Monarch really gets it down to a T. They look at what I’m good at – primary or secondary – and place me where I can thrive.”

Unlike other agencies, Monarch Education takes the time to match candidates with the right school environments, ensuring both the TA and the school benefit from the placement.

Making a Difference in the Classroom

Debrah brings years of experience to her role, including a background working with autism and her nurturing approach has made her a trusted figure in every classroom she’s worked in.

“Children look at me as an older person, and they come to me for comfort. I get on so well with the staff too – I’m very open and upfront, and I think people appreciate that.”

She recalls a moment when she was unsure about a new placement, but with encouragement from her consultant Holly, she gave it a go – and instantly connected with the school.

“By lunchtime I was like, ‘Oh my God, can I come for the rest of the week?’ They saw something in me, and that meant a lot.”

The Benefits of Working with Monarch Education

Debrah’s relationship with her consultant is a key part of her success. She describes Holly from the Bristol team as “like a good friend” – someone who listens, communicates clearly, and always ensures she’s supported.

“We work really well together. Holly always plans ahead and lets me know if there’s anything I need to be aware of before I get to school.”

At 62, Debrah sees this as her final job – and she’s proud to be a stable, experienced presence in the classroom. She’s even encouraged other TAs to join Monarch Education.

“It’s not just about being a TA – it’s about having support from your agency. That’s what makes the difference.”

Advice for Aspiring Teaching Assistants

Debrah’s advice to anyone considering a supply TA role is clear: “Be honest. Tell the agency what you’re happy to do – and what you’re not. Monarch listens. They might not always get it right first time, but they’re prepared to move you or help you find the right placement.”

She also highlights the flexibility of supply work, which fits perfectly with her lifestyle and love of travel.

“I absolutely adore my job. I never, ever get the Sunday scaries. I can’t wait to go in. Every day is different, and every day is special.”

A Heartfelt Thank You to All Teaching Assistants

On this National Teaching Assistant Day, we want to say a huge thank you to Debrah – and to every TA working tirelessly to support children, teachers, and schools. Your work is invaluable, and your impact is felt far beyond the classroom.
