About the Role
Monarch Education are currently recruiting for a Teaching Assistant to support pupils with severe learning difficulties (SLD) and complex communication needs within a specialist SEN school in Alfreton.
This role is highly rewarding and focuses on supporting pupils who rely on alternative communication methods such as Makaton, PECS, and visual aids to access learning and express themselves.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with severe learning needs
- Use Makaton, visual timetables, and communication aids to support understanding and expression
- Assist in delivering sensory-based and differentiated learning activities
- Support pupils with personal care needs where required, maintaining dignity and respect
- Encourage engagement, interaction, and communication development
- Help implement EHCP targets and individual support strategies
- Promote emotional wellbeing and positive behaviour
- Work closely with teachers, speech and language therapists, and SEND professionals
Requirements
- Experience supporting children or young people with SLD, PMLD, or complex needs
- Knowledge or experience of Makaton or alternative communication methods
- Comfortable supporting personal care needs
- A patient, caring, and proactive approach
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to adapt to individual learning styles and needs
- Passion for supporting pupils with additional needs
Desirable
- Makaton training
- Experience in a specialist SEN school or care setting
- Knowledge of sensory learning approaches
- Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, or support work
- Team Teach or similar behaviour management training
