We are seeking an enthusiastic, resilient, and compassionate Sports Coach & Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in Telford.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about using sport and physical activity to engage and motivate young people while also providing classroom support to help students overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential.

The successful candidate will play a key role in promoting positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and student engagement across both sports provision and classroom environments.

The Role

As a Sports Coach & Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Deliver engaging sports, PE, and physical activity sessions that promote confidence, teamwork, and resilience.
  • Support students with SEMH needs, helping them develop emotional regulation and positive coping strategies.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced challenges in education.
  • Provide classroom-based Teaching Assistant support across a range of subjects.
  • Assist teachers in delivering lessons and adapting learning to meet individual needs.
  • Use positive behaviour management strategies to support students both in and out of the classroom.
  • Encourage participation, attendance, and engagement through motivational and therapeutic approaches.
  • Contribute to creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working with children or young people in education, sports coaching, youth work, mentoring, or care settings.
  • Understands the challenges faced by students with SEMH, behavioural needs, or additional learning needs.
  • Has knowledge or experience of supporting young people with mental health needs.
  • Is passionate about improving outcomes for vulnerable learners.
  • Can remain calm, patient, and resilient in challenging situations.
  • Has excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Is flexible and willing to support both sports delivery and classroom learning.
  • Demonstrates a positive, proactive, and nurturing approach.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • Level 2 or Level 3 Sports Coaching qualification.
  • Teaching Assistant experience.
  • Experience within SEMH, SEND, Alternative Provision, or specialist educational settings.
  • Mental Health, Behaviour Support, Team Teach, or Trauma-Informed Practice training.
