SEND Teaching Assistant – Alternative Provision

About the School

Monarch Education are working with an Alternative Provision in the DE1 area of Derby, supporting children and young people who require additional support outside of a mainstream school environment.

Pupils may have a range of SEND, SEMH, behavioural and emotional needs, and may have experienced challenges engaging successfully within mainstream education.

The provision offers a structured and supportive environment focused on helping pupils re-engage with learning, build positive relationships and develop confidence and resilience.

About the Role

Monarch Education is looking for a confident and resilient SEND Teaching Assistant with experience working within Alternative Provision, PRU or specialist SEND settings.

You will provide 1:1, small group and classroom support, working closely with pupils who may display challenging behaviour or struggle with emotional regulation and engagement.

You will need to be calm, consistent and able to build strong professional relationships, while maintaining clear boundaries and encouraging positive behaviour.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small group SEND support.
• Support pupils with SEMH, behavioural and additional needs.
• Help pupils re-engage positively with education.
• Build trusting and appropriate relationships with young people.
• Support pupils with emotional regulation and challenging situations.
• Promote positive behaviour, confidence and resilience.
• Maintain clear and consistent boundaries.
• Support learning and engagement within the classroom.
• Follow individual behaviour, education and support plans.
• Work closely with teachers, pastoral teams and other professionals.

Essential Requirements

• Previous experience working within an Alternative Provision, PRU, SEND or similar specialist setting.
• Experience supporting children or young people with additional needs.
• Confidence supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour.
• A calm, patient and resilient approach.
• Ability to establish clear professional boundaries.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
• Right to work in the UK.

Desirable Experience

• Experience supporting pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs.
• Experience working with pupils who have struggled within mainstream education.
• Trauma-informed practice.
• Youth work, mentoring, support work or care experience.
• Team Teach or other positive behaviour management training.
