Learning Support Assistant – Alternative Provision | KS3 & KS4

Location: Chesterfield, S41
Full-Time & Part-Time Opportunities

Monarch Education is recruiting Learning Support Assistants to work within a specialist Alternative Provision in Chesterfield, supporting pupils across KS3 and KS4.

The provision works with young people who may have experienced difficulties within mainstream education, including pupils with SEMH needs, behavioural challenges and those who have been permanently excluded.

Many of the pupils have become disengaged from education and require a different approach to learning. Your role will be to provide consistent support, build positive relationships and help young people develop the social, emotional and behavioural skills they need to successfully engage in education.

We are looking for people who are resilient, approachable and able to see beyond challenging behaviour. You’ll need high expectations for the young people you support, alongside patience, consistency and a good sense of humour.

About the Provision

The setting provides a supportive and structured learning environment for KS3 and KS4 pupils who require additional help to access education.

Support will include:

  • Working with young people with SEMH and behavioural needs
  • Supporting pupils who have become disengaged from mainstream education
  • Helping pupils develop their social and communication skills
  • Supporting young people to recognise and regulate their emotions and behaviour
  • Helping pupils rebuild positive attitudes towards learning
  • Providing additional support with Maths, English and the wider curriculum
  • Encouraging confidence, independence and resilience
  • Supporting pupils who have experienced permanent exclusion

Learning Support Assistant Responsibilities

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to KS3 and KS4 pupils
  • Building positive and consistent relationships with young people
  • Supporting pupils who may present with challenging or dysregulated behaviour
  • Helping young people identify strategies to manage their emotions and responses
  • Encouraging pupils to engage with lessons and make positive academic progress
  • Promoting the development of social skills, confidence and independence
  • Maintaining clear expectations and boundaries within the learning environment
  • Using positive behaviour strategies to help pupils make better choices
  • Working alongside teaching and pastoral staff to provide consistent support
  • Celebrating progress and encouraging pupils who may have previously struggled within education

Who We’re Looking For

Experience supporting young people with behavioural, social or emotional needs would be highly beneficial. We would particularly like to hear from candidates with backgrounds in:

  • Alternative Provision or PRUs
  • SEMH or SEND education
  • Behaviour support
  • Pastoral support
  • Youth work
  • Mentoring
  • Residential childcare
  • Children’s support work
  • Sports coaching
  • Other roles involving young people with additional or behavioural needs

This can be a challenging environment, so you’ll need to be resilient, confident and able to remain calm under pressure. Just as importantly, we’re looking for someone who can connect with young people, bring positivity into the classroom and maintain a sense of humour when things don’t go to plan.

You’ll need to have high expectations of every pupil, recognising their potential even when they may struggle to recognise it themselves.

An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service is desirable, or you must be willing to obtain one.

Why This Role?

Working within Alternative Provision gives you the opportunity to make an impact on young people who may have struggled to find their place within mainstream education.

Progress can look different for every pupil. It might be completing a lesson, managing their emotions differently, building a positive relationship with an adult or beginning to believe they can achieve.

As a Learning Support Assistant, you’ll play an important part in helping pupils re-engage with education, develop their social skills, regulate their behaviour and work towards more positive outcomes.

If this particular opportunity isn’t right for you but you’re looking for roles within Alternative Provision, SEMH or SEND across Nottinghamshire, Chesterfield or Derbyshire, please contact us on 0115 977 5500.
