1:1 SEND / SEMH Tutor & Mentor
Make a Difference Where It Matters Most
Do you want a role where success isn’t measured by test scores alone?
Are you the kind of person who understands that trust comes before learning?
Can you build positive relationships with children and young people who may have been let down by education, struggled to access school, or simply need the right person in their corner?
At Monarch Education, we are looking for compassionate, resilient and creative individuals to support children and young people on a 1:1 basis through bespoke education and mentoring packages.
Many of the learners we support have been out of education for weeks, months or sometimes longer. They haven’t stopped being capable, they’ve simply been waiting for the right support, delivered in the right way, by the right person.
This Is Not Your Typical Tutoring Role
This is a community-based position rather than a traditional classroom environment.
You’ll work with children and young people aged 5-16 years who may have:
- SEND needs
- SEMH needs
- Autism
- ADHD
- Anxiety or emotionally based school avoidance
- Trauma-related needs
- Learning difficulties
- Behavioural challenges
- EHCPs
Some learners may require 2:1 or 3:1 support depending on their needs.
What You’ll Be Doing
No two days will look the same.
You could be:
- Delivering 1:1 English and Maths support
- Planning engaging sessions based on a child’s interests
- Supporting learning through outdoor activities and community experiences
- Using creative, practical or vocational learning approaches
- Helping young people develop confidence, independence and social skills
- Supporting learners to regulate emotions and manage feelings of overwhelm
- Encouraging participation in community activities
- Acting as a consistent, trusted adult and positive role model
- Building rapport and trust before expecting academic engagement
- Celebrating small but significant milestones
What Success Looks Like
Progress isn’t always measured by academic outcomes.
Sometimes success is:
- A young person leaving the house for the first time in weeks
- Engaging in an activity they previously refused
- Managing emotions more effectively
- Attending a full session
- Trying something new
- Building a positive relationship with a trusted adult
- Smiling when they didn’t last week
These moments matter, and they’re often the foundation for everything that comes next.
We’re Looking For Someone Who
- Is patient, resilient and emotionally intelligent
- Can remain calm during challenging situations
- Builds relationships through humour, empathy and consistency
- Understands that behaviour is communication
- Has experience supporting children or young people with SEND or SEMH needs
- Is creative and adaptable in their approach
- Promotes confidence, independence and self-belief
- Can tailor support to individual learning styles and interests
Ideal Backgrounds Include
- Tutoring
- Teaching Assistant roles
- SEND education
- SEMH settings
- Youth work
- Family support work
- Children’s residential care
- Social care
- Mentoring
- Sports coaching
- Community support roles
Essential Requirements
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Access to a reliable vehicle
- Business insurance suitable for transporting children and young people
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
Why Apply?
This is a genuinely child-centred role where relationships come first.
You’ll have the opportunity to make a lasting difference to young people’s lives by helping them reconnect with learning, develop confidence, increase independence and access opportunities they may have previously felt were out of reach.
If you’re looking for a role where every small breakthrough matters, we’d love to hear from you.
