This is an excellent opportunity for experienced Early Years Practitioners, Teaching Assistants, Nursery Assistants, or individuals with relevant childcare qualifications who are looking to gain valuable experience across a variety of educational settings.

The Role

As an Early Years Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting children aged 0-5 years within nurseries, preschool settings, and primary school Reception classes.

You will work closely with teachers and nursery staff to create a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment that promotes children’s social, emotional, physical, and educational development.

Your responsibilities may include:

• Supporting children during play-based learning activities.
• Assisting with phonics, early literacy, numeracy, and communication development.
• Encouraging positive behaviour and social interaction.
• Supporting children with personal care where required.
• Helping to prepare learning resources and classroom activities.
• Supervising indoor and outdoor play sessions.
• Supporting children with additional learning needs and SEND requirements.
• Observing and recording children’s progress and achievements.
• Assisting with snack times, lunch supervision, and daily routines.
• Promoting safeguarding, welfare, and wellbeing at all times.

A Day in the Life of a Supply Early Years Teaching Assistant

One of the biggest benefits of supply work is variety. You could find yourself supporting a Reception class in a local primary school one day and helping a nursery setting deliver engaging learning experiences the next.

A typical day may include:

• Arriving at your assigned setting and being briefed on the day’s plans.
• Supporting children during structured learning activities, arts and crafts, sensory play, and outdoor learning.
• Working with small groups to develop early reading, phonics, counting, and communication skills.
• Encouraging children to build confidence, independence, and social skills through play.
• Supporting snack and lunchtime routines while promoting positive behaviour.
• Assisting with transitions between activities and helping maintain a calm and engaging learning environment.
• Finishing the day knowing you have made a positive impact on children’s development while enjoying the flexibility that supply work offers.

Supply work allows you to gain experience across different settings, build valuable relationships within schools and nurseries, and maintain flexibility around your lifestyle and commitments.

What We’re Looking For

Essential Requirements

• Experience working with children within a nursery, preschool, childcare, school, or educational setting.
• A genuine passion for supporting young children’s learning and development.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to adapt quickly to new environments.
• A caring, patient, and nurturing approach.
• An enhanced DBS certificate on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
• References covering the last 2 years of employment, education, or voluntary work.
• The right to work in the UK.
• Understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.
• Reliable, punctual, and professional at all times.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

• CACHE Level 2 or Level 3 in Childcare or Early Years.
• Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
• Early Years Practitioner qualification.
• Knowledge and understanding of the EYFS Framework.
• Experience supporting children with SEND.
• Paediatric First Aid certification.
• Experience working in primary schools or nursery settings.
