We are working with a supportive secondary school in Tewkesbury that is seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their pastoral support team from March 2026. This long-term role is perfect for someone with experience supporting students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs who is passionate about helping learners overcome barriers and thrive.

About the Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will support students who experience emotional or behavioural challenges, ensuring they can engage safely and confidently in learning. You will work both one-to-one and in small groups, delivering targeted interventions, helping manage emotions, and supporting classroom routines. Your role will involve encouraging positive behaviour, promoting self-esteem, and helping students build key life and learning skills.
This role requires patience, empathy, consistency, and the ability to form strong, supportive relationships with young people.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support for students with SEMH needs
- Assist with emotional regulation, behaviour management, and engagement in lessons
- Work closely with SENCOs, Pastoral Leads, and classroom teachers
- Implement individual support plans, behaviour strategies, and targeted interventions
- Promote resilience, confidence, and positive decision-making
- Help maintain a calm, safe, and structured learning environment
- Build strong, trusting relationships with students to encourage positive outcomes
- Support the school’s inclusive and community-focused ethos
- Maintain accurate records and follow safeguarding procedures at all times

- Experience working with SEMH needs or in a pastoral/SEN role within a school
- Strong communication, empathy, and relationship-building skills
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and consistent in challenging situations

- Understanding of behaviour management and emotional regulation strategies
- Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and school values
- Secondary school experience desirable – training available for the right candidate
