We are excited to partner with a specialist SEND primary school in Birmingham, seeking out a dedicated learning mentor. You will be responsible in supporting the educational journey of students with ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition) and following individualised learning plans for each child (EHCP’s) to ensure every child reaches their potential.

Ideally, you will have worked in a special school before. However, this is not absolutely necessary, depending on the level of SEND experience you have. It may be the case you have worked with adults with learning difficulties, perhaps you have a family member with ASC. What actually is the role?

You would be working in a primary special school for students who have ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition) and additional needs. The actual role itself, would involve guiding special needs children through their educational journey, with the use of sensory toys and engaging activities. You would need to adapt the national curriculum where necessary to ensure every child gets a fair chance at learning.

Requirements to apply:

  • SOME experience with SEND. We will accept experience outside of a school setting Experience working in a
  • School or education-based setting preferred but not essential
  • A knowledge of Makaton, PECS communication, and Autism Awareness would be a HUGE advantag
  • A good knowledge of the National Curriculum

The following skills would be advantageous:

  • Strong communication skills to effectively communicate with students, their families, and other professionals involved in their education
  • Patience and empathy to support and understand the unique needs and challenges faced by students with special needs
  • Knowledge of various learning strategies and accommodations to help students with different abilities succeed in their education
  • Ability to build positive relationships and create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students with special needs
