About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Specialist Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in Chesterfield from September 2026.
This rewarding role involves supporting children and young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), complex medical needs, physical disabilities, and sensory processing needs. Pupils may require highly personalised support to access learning, communicate effectively, and engage with the world around them.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will support pupils through tailored sensory experiences, communication-based learning, therapeutic interventions, and personal care routines. You will play a vital role in helping students develop independence, build relationships, and achieve meaningful outcomes in a nurturing and inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with PMLD, sensory needs, and complex learning difficulties.
- Support pupils in accessing personalised learning activities and sensory-based experiences.
- Assist with the delivery of sensory integration activities and sensory regulation strategies.
- Promote communication using a variety of approaches, including Makaton, PECS, objects of reference, and assistive technology.
- Support pupils with personal care, feeding, and mobility needs where required.
- Assist with therapy programmes under the guidance of teaching and specialist staff.
- Create a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment.
- Encourage the development of independence, communication, and social interaction skills.
- Monitor and record pupil progress, wellbeing, and engagement.
- Support pupils during classroom activities, hydrotherapy sessions, educational visits, and enrichment activities where appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, medical professionals, and parents/carers.
Requirements
- Experience working with children, young people, or adults with additional needs in education, care, health, or support settings.
- A genuine passion for supporting pupils with complex needs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patient, nurturing, and empathetic approach.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Understanding of the importance of dignity, inclusion, and pupil-centred support.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
