1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant – Harborne, Birmingham

Monarch Education is working with a welcoming primary school in the Harborne area of Birmingham, and we are seeking a compassionate and experienced 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant to support a Year 4 pupil with non-verbal needs. This role requires someone who genuinely cares about making a difference and has previous experience working with children with complex communication needs.

This is a full-time, ongoing position until at least July 2025, with the potential to extend into the next academic year.

Your Role:

As a 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant, your main focus will be supporting a child who is non-verbal, helping them access the curriculum and participate fully in school life. You will work closely with the pupil, using their preferred methods of communication to foster understanding and engagement. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include creating a safe, nurturing environment where the child feels comfortable, confident, and supported to develop socially, emotionally, and academically.

You will be responsible for building a trusting relationship with the child, adapting your approach to meet their individual needs, and providing consistent support throughout the school day. You will also keep open communication with teachers, parents, and other professionals, providing updates on progress and any concerns. Safeguarding and child protection are a priority, and you will follow all policies to ensure the child’s safety at all times.

What you’ll need:

  • A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in Childcare, Education, or SEND
  • Proven experience working with children with non-verbal autism or similar special educational needs
  • A good understanding of the primary curriculum and strategies for supporting children with SEND
  • Confidence in supporting children of different ages and abilities
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping children overcome challenges and thrive
