About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in Chesterfield from September 2026.
This is an excellent opportunity for an individual passionate about supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN). You will work closely with pupils who have a range of additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), communication needs, and associated social, emotional, and behavioural challenges.
Working within a supportive and experienced team, you will play a key role in helping pupils access learning, build confidence, develop independence, and achieve their individual goals. This role is ideal for someone committed to making a positive difference in the lives of young people with additional needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups throughout the school day.
- Assist teachers in delivering engaging and differentiated learning activities.
- Adapt support strategies to meet individual pupil needs and learning styles.
- Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment.
- Support pupils with communication, social interaction, and emotional development.
- Encourage independence, confidence, and personal achievement.
- Implement individual education plans (IEPs) and support EHCP outcomes.
- Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing.
- Support pupils during classroom activities, breaktimes, and educational visits.
Requirements
- Experience working with children or young people in education, childcare, youth work, care, or similar settings.
- A genuine passion for supporting pupils with additional needs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with pupils, staff, and families.
- Patient, caring, and resilient approach.
- Ability to adapt to the individual needs of pupils.
- Strong organisational skills and willingness to learn.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Desirable
- Previous experience working within an SEN, SEND, or specialist school setting.
- Experience supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).
- Knowledge of Makaton, PECS, or other communication approaches.
- Understanding of sensory processing needs.
- Experience supporting pupils with EHCPs.
- Knowledge of behaviour management strategies.
- Relevant qualifications in Education, Childcare, Psychology, Health & Social Care, or a related field.
- Interest in progressing into teaching, therapy, educational psychology, or specialist support roles.
