Teaching Assistant – Secondary Alternative Provision

Location: Nottinghamshire / Mansfield
Start Date: September 2026
Contract: Full-time / Part-time / Flexible


About the Role

We are seeking a resilient and dedicated Teaching Assistant to work within a Secondary Alternative Provision setting, supporting students who require additional support outside of mainstream education.

This role is ideal for individuals passionate about making a difference, working with young people who may face Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, behavioural challenges, or barriers to learning.

You will play a key role in re-engaging students with education, promoting positive behaviour, and supporting their personal and academic development.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to secondary-aged pupils
  • Support students with SEMH needs and challenging behaviour
  • Assist in delivering tailored and engaging learning activities
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with students
  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies
  • Help create a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment
  • Support pupils to re-engage with education and achieve their goals
  • Work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams
  • Follow safeguarding policies and procedures at all times

Requirements

  • Experience working with young people, ideally within education or support settings
  • Strong behaviour management skills
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build strong relationships and act as a positive role model
  • Passion for supporting vulnerable or disengaged students

Desirable

  • Experience working in alternative provision, PRU, or SEN settings
  • Knowledge of SEMH and behaviour support strategies
  • Team Teach or similar training
  • Understanding of trauma-informed approaches
