Teaching Assistant – Alternative Provision

Location: Chesterfield, S41
Full-Time & Part-Time Opportunities

Monarch Education is currently recruiting Teaching Assistants to work within a specialist Alternative Provision in Chesterfield.

The provision supports children and young people who may have SEMH needs, behavioural difficulties or have been permanently excluded from mainstream education. Pupils often require a more individualised and nurturing approach to help them re-engage with learning, build positive relationships and develop confidence within education.

We are looking for resilient, patient and nurturing individuals who understand that behaviour is often a form of communication and can provide pupils with the consistency and positive relationships they need to succeed.

About the Provision

Pupils follow a nurture-based curriculum, with a focus on helping them successfully re-engage with education. This includes:

  • Supporting a Nurture Group curriculum
  • Delivering and supporting phonics and Maths
  • Working with pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs
  • Supporting children who have been permanently excluded from mainstream education
  • Helping pupils overcome barriers to learning and rebuild positive attitudes towards education
  • Supporting emotional regulation, confidence and social development

Teaching Assistant Responsibilities

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH and additional needs
  • Supporting pupils who may display challenging or dysregulated behaviour
  • Building strong, consistent and trusting relationships with young people
  • Supporting the delivery of phonics, Maths and nurture-based activities
  • Helping pupils to re-engage with learning following difficult experiences within mainstream education
  • Using positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques where required
  • Supporting children’s emotional regulation and social development
  • Working closely with teaching and pastoral staff to provide consistent support
  • Creating a safe, structured and nurturing environment where pupils can make progress

Who We’re Looking For

We would particularly like to hear from people with experience in:

  • Alternative Provision / PRUs
  • SEMH or SEND settings
  • Behaviour or pastoral support
  • Youth work
  • Residential childcare
  • Children’s support work
  • Mentoring
  • Sports coaching or other roles supporting young people with challenging behaviour

You will need to be confident, resilient and emotionally adaptable, with the ability to remain calm when pupils are struggling to regulate their emotions.

An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service is desirable, or you must be willing to obtain one.

Why This Role?

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to make a genuine difference to young people who haven’t always had a positive experience of education.

Success in Alternative Provision isn’t just about academic progress. You’ll help pupils rebuild trust, develop confidence, regulate their emotions and re-engage with learning, giving them the opportunity to achieve positive outcomes beyond the classroom.

If this particular role isn’t right for you but you’re looking for opportunities within Alternative Provision, SEMH or SEND across Nottinghamshire, Chesterfield or Derbyshire, please contact us on 0115 977 5500.
